Helsby RC Weekend Round-up 17th – 18th January 2015

Hi everyone
Please find a few words from our Chair Jackie below:
“Sunday was a tough day to take for Helsby Running Club, for both organisers, helpers and runners, with the cancellation of our race. Ironically this year we were more organised than ever with a big “Green Army” effort to put the race on. We could not have done any more. Unfortunately we cannot organise the weather. It was so unkind, particularly given the sunny Saturday when we set up and yesterday which was a good running day.
Anyway, although there’s quite a bit to do to wind the race down, lets move onwards …. and upwards…
On Wednesday after this weeks club run, we will be meeting in the bar to discuss and fix the race calendar for this year’s road and fell fixtures. Please come along if you wish to get involved. Plus I am sure there will be Gareth’s Four Villages wash up group going on as well. At the bar, Kyle will be making and selling bacon barms to use up some of the leftovers from yesterday. We sampled them in the bar at the end of yesterday and they are delicious! Your support is welcome! Plus next Saturday,24th January there is plenty on. Paul Bulmer who was due to run yesterday and had a lot of sponsorship hanging on the race would like to do the Four Villages next weekend. Alison does not think he will be well and fit enough to run next year and after all his training he would like do it next week. So Saturday 11am at the club house for a Club Four Villages Half Run. We will try and organise a drinks station in Manley and remember if anyone wants a shorter route there is the cut-off at Nortons Lane which saves 3 miles and there are other short-cuts. We just need some course leaders after December’s training run! Any volunteers please?
Then following this its the HRC club, not to be missed, Xmas Party. Please come along and wash away Xmas and the Four Villages blues. Chris Igoe on the disco,(Wheels of Steel) plus the band Nifties will be playing a session whilst we eat. It’s a bring along buffet with a selection of hot food (lasagne/chilli/a vegetarian option) available. All we require from you is an indication of numbers (family and friends welcome) and a donation of salads, nibbles or a pudding/cake/sweet to add to the feast.. Starts at 7:30. Please let Lesley know numbers davidfeakes1234@btinternet.com
It would be great if we can fill the club–house. It will make it warm and cosy (just like the last amazing party Chris did) plus supports the sports club bar, which these days very much depends on good custom!”
Cheers in running and partying!
Jackie
[Edit, 20 Jan] Here’s the Chester Chronicle’s take on it and some good quotes from one of our runners: http://www.chesterchronicle.co.uk/news/chester-cheshire-news/cancellation-essar-four-villages-half-8472706

In other news, two Helsby runners ran at the Delamere parkrun, congratulations to Louise McEveley and Ivor Johnson who both flew the flag for HRC at this event. Alfie Grady was our sole Helsby representative at the inaugural Widnes Parkrun and ran a great time to get a top 20 position. I have reccied this course myself a few times and it looks like a fast one so maybe one to try for a PB?

Also on Saturday, our long trail stalwart Andy Robinson was out running in Calder Valley, full report from Andy below:
“On Saturday I was running in the Calder Valley in the snow for 22 miles.  The event was the Hebden, a hilly and intricate route around the sides of the valley and over the moors that I’ve run many times before – it’s a great warm-up race for the year.  I took it easy this year, or tried to, since I’m still coughing after my Xmas cold.  And I took the dog with me, to pull me up the hills & pull me over going down them again.  Ben Mounsey was 1st in 2:59, and I was close behind him.  Until Merlin had to stop at the first tree, then we somehow lost touch.  We finished 54th out of 156 finishers, in 4:25, 20 minutes outside my p.b.  But what a great event it is in the snow!  Full results are at www.alangreenwood.biz/index.html
Well done Andy, especially getting out there with the man flu!
