Helsby Running Club

Our races

Helsby half

We host the well loved Four Villages Half Marathon (sponsored by EET) at the start of the year – the perfect motivation to keep running over the Christmas period, and the start of many people’s road campaign for the year. The race is around the 3rd or 4th Sunday of January, entries typically opening on 1 Oct. It does fill fast, so worth getting your entry in promptly. Voted UK’s Best Half Marathon, North!

Sandstone trail

We’re lucky enough to find ourselves situated at the top of one of the area’s best long distance footpaths, the Sandstone Trail. In May we also hold the Joe Beswick Sandstone Trail Challenge, an end to end challenge for walkers and runners. We always get great feedback from this and it’s a pleasure to see people’s faces at the end when they’ve achieved something special. Bus to the start from Frodsham to Whitchurch (in a whole other county) and then make your way back to Frodsham, passing the well-stocked food and drink checkpoints on the way. Wouldn’t you like to complete the entire 34 mile length of the long distance trail within 10 hours?

Border’s league

We are on the rota to host a round of the Borders League, an inter-club series of road events held over the winter months. Most recently we’ve used new courses on the Wigg Island nature reserve (a delightful space alongside the Manchester Ship Canal) and a course based out of Manley Mere.

The wobbler

In memory of one of our club stalwarts who sadly passed away in 2012, Robbie Webster, we also host a fell inspired trail race over Frodsham Hill. Robbie Webster’s Wobbler is, according to Garmin, 8.8km in distance with roughly 500m of ascent, ie 5.5 Miles and 1650 ft. Guaranteed to leave your legs wobbling! Don’t be fooled by the ‘trail race’ moniker, this is tough little fell race in disguise.
