Chester Half Marathon

Les Dash sent us the following race report on the Chester Half:

Sunday 18th May saw the Chester Half Marathon take place, race two in the Chester triple and as it did last year, the sun shone bright on Chester for a glorious day out (although maybe a little too much) very much like three weeks prior for those that contested the Manchester and London Marathons.

Nevertheless, Helsby had 17 runners on the start line at Chester racecourse, plus 5 of the next generation of Helsby runners taking part in the mini marathon ready and waiting to run their own 1 mile race round the racecourse.  As always as a Helsby runner the support out on course from locals was amazing, with residents on course showering the runners with hose pipes, kids out with water guns and even more water stations than advertised, so even with the heat you were never far from an opportunity to cool down, which we all took every opportunity to take advantage of 🙂

Not only did we have runners out on course, we had some Helsby volunteers in the finish enclosure, with Phil Wood giving out medals and Bex Cartwright handing out goodie bags, which was a very welcome sight after a gruelling 13.1 miles in the heat.

Helsby then proceeded to take over most of the beer garden terrace at the architect (although now mostly dressed in orange finishers t-shirts) for post race drinks and food, a truly great day was had by all.

Chirk Relays

Aidan Hughes sent us the following race report on the Chirk Spring Relays:

“Three teams from Helsby running club took part in the relay:

Helsby Hurricanes: Catherine Kilbane, Stephanie Garner & Charlotte King

Sebastian OhNo: Rob Fernyhough, Aidan Hughes & Les Dash

Mad May 2: Joey Kelly, Chris Green & Phil Wood

A fantastic evening of racing. The Helsby Hurricanes getting on the podium with a 3rd place finish in the female category was an outstanding result with a huge prize of £5 each, spend it wisely ladies.

The men’s teams achieved very respectable results with Sebastan OhNo placing in 6th and Mad May 2 placing 12th.

All of the teams doing a great job of representing Helsby. With some great individual battles throughout the race, standout for Aidan is the battle from the castle all the way to the finish line with an all-out sprint to hold the team’s position to the finish.”
