Friday 30th April saw the first racing debut of athletes from the newest running club in the area, Cheshire Dragons. The Club came about due to the pandemic – for about fifteen years Bernie Jones has been organizing training sessions in Cuddington but due to the pandemic had little alternative other than to form a club to satisfy various Covid restrictions. The Club is officially registered with England Athletics and already nearly 50 runners who were members of the training group have signed up, the majority of them first claim, including Bernie who has left Wrexham after 47 years himself and Helsby’s very own Hannah Cowley, who has been training with the group for the past few years. The training group has always attracted runners from across Cheshire and from North Wales 🏴so it was an easy decision to name the club Cheshire Dragons.
The new club is a senior only club which will focus on endurance running with the clubs vision to train hard, compete hard and play hard!
It was fitting that the Mid Cheshire 5km was the debut race for the new club – Helen Harrington (Race Director Mike Harrington’s wife) is a founder member of the Training group and subsequently Cheshire Dragons. In all fourteen Cheshire Dragons toed the line in Kingsley with eight of them grabbing PB’s. Top of those was Hannah Cowley with a fantastic new 5km of 17:21. There is no doubt that this talented young woman will go much faster over the coming months.
Editor’s note: although Hannah is now a first claim member of Cheshire Dragons, she is a fully paid-up second claim member of Helsby RC 🙂
