It was the Peris horseshoe and half on Saturday with two intrepid adventurers in Tim Palmer and Jim O’Hara nailing one of each. Tim’s excellent race report below.
The Peris Horseshoe (Ras Pedol Peris) is one of the classic Welsh fell races. The full horseshoe is AL 17.5 miles 8597ft ascent (28.2km 2590m) and half is AM 8.5 miles 4500ft ascent (13.7km 1372m). As it was my first long fell race, I opted for the Half Horseshoe that finishes at Pen-y-Pass (and at the finish was glad that I made that choice!) The half starts in Llanberis haf hour before the full race; after a few hundred metres on the flat, it is straight onto the steep climb through the quarries and beyond to the summit of Elidir Fawr (924m / 3,031ft). After 3 miles with ½ mile of ascent and just over an hour, I was at the summit – the tremendous views and downhill cheered my spirits. It is then onto Y Garn (947m / 3,017ft) and Glyder Fawr (999m / 3,247ft) – both with substantial climbs onto them. I was passed by the two leaders of full Peris Horseshoe on the climb up Y Garn – my spirit was again cheered to see that even they couldn’t run up it. After a fast descent, I was passed a cheerful Jim at the top of Devil’s Kitchen, who soon disappeared out of sight on the climb up Glyder Fawr. The descent off Glyder Fawr to Pen-y-Pass was steep and the best route isn’t obvious – there were almost as many variants on it as runners! It was then on to finish, cheered on by an enthusiastic and vocal Jenny by the bins of the youth hostel (as described by Mike Blake, the race director, in his briefing). My time was 2:51 – full results awaited. Whilst I was racing, Jenny had found a nice 5 mile run (with about 400ft of climb) around Llyn Padarn for the car park in Llanberis – well marked just follow the posts with the white ring on them. The weather was kind to both of us with sunny spells and some cloud; I benefited from the cooler temperatures on the mountain tops and the light breeze.

Full results should appear on the Welsh Fell Runners website shortly (I’ll update blog when results are out but I believe Jimmy had an amazing 6th place in the full horseshoe, kudos Jimmy, we are liking the cut of your jib)

In other news
I will be away travelling in South America for a few weeks so it would be great if someone could do the round-up starting from Monday 29th September including Monday 6th October and Monday 13th October!
It may be best if it’s on a rota basis rather than put the onus on one individual? Chester chronicle like the information submitted as early as possible now and they can be contacted on their email chester.sport@cheshirenews.co.uk, basically with runners names and times and the event only.
I’ll mention again before I go.
Keep on running
Adair
