Long Mynd Valleys
Our first fell counter of the season and 3 of our Felsby contingent were out in force. Well done chaps. CBH takes over the reins with his full report:
untitled“The first Fell counter of the year got off to a stiff start! Numerous injuries to the Felsby team (and one person reporting that their “fell shoes broke in half”) meant numbers were down on the day. It was a tough start to the year with 18.5k and 1370m (4500ft) of climb – most of which was in the last 5k – but a very rewarding one. The weather was overcast and grey, but thankfully no clag which would have made completing this race a very different prospect!
untitled3For those that haven’t run in the Long Mynd before it is fantastic, rising either side of Church Stretton the terrain is steep and a mix of grass, heather, tussocks and the odd muddy path. The views are fantastic although the course gave little option to view it as we tumbled down steep descents and climbed slippy re-entrants.
In the end Jimmy O’Hara took the spoils for Helsby untitled2with a stunning run; comfortably under the two hour watershed. I followed on as did Phil Roberts and a myriad of familiar faces. Fantastic atmosphere afterwards as runners tried in vain to wash off the mud in the streams and grab their soup and roll before some standard car park nudity.
Next up is Llantysilio on the 26th March. A cracking race put on by Tattenhall, hopefully injuries will have abated by then and Felsby will be back to a full contingent… I even heard a rumour that Chris Fitzpatrick may slip on some serious daps and join in… you heard it here first ladies and gents!”

L&D XC Clarke Gardens
Chris Murray seems to be a big fan of the muddy stuff and found himself the sole Helsby representative at the L&D XC in Clarke Gardens. Well done on an excellent race and for flying the Helsby flag. Please find Chris’s report below:
“The L&D Champs was another fantastic XC race last weekend held in Clarke Gardens by Mossley Hill AC. The sun was out and the mud was shin deep but that didn’t deter 152 brave souls from braving the farm yard conditions. As the sole Green Army vest I did my best to get a good time and not let the side down finishing 72nd in a time of 44 mins 16 sec. The course itself was four shorter laps making up a total of 6 miles rather than the 3 laps of the Sunday League course with the last couple hundred yards a energy sapping quagmire. All in all I had fun and I’m looking forward to the next race on the 21st at Birchwood Forest Park.”

Nick Beer 10k
FB_IMG_1454932469726_resizedNew member Davyd Michell ventured over to Llandudno in stormy conditions to partake in the Nick Beer 10k. This race is a popular one and always attracts a strong brace of athletes and Davyd ran his socks off to produce a superb PB in 46.17 and 152nd place. Well done and great time considering you go up and down the Orme and it was blowing a gale! must be all those tempo runs you’ve been doing 🙂

Halewood 5k
The Halewood 5k is a free monthly 5k race which starts at the Environment Centre in Halewood and is an out and back course along the Transpennine Trail. It’s almost completely flat so it attracts some of the best local runners and has even had some national runners take part – Jonny Mellor holds the course record at 14.45!
