Green Army – Capenhurst 5k – 15th August 2024
Round up blog
We’re looking to start getting these writeups out again, as they’re a great way to showcase everything that’s going on within the club. However, this is only possible with YOUR material sent in each week to put these together – please send to helsbyracereports@gmail.com. As long as the topic is club related it is fair game for the round up blog. Words, photos, videos (hopefully) all welcome! We’re also looking for new budding blog writers who can share authoring duties (rather than it all being the work of 1 or 2 people) – please contact Chris Levick or Ian Mayhew if this is something you’d be interested in helping out with.
Recent races
So onto the races of the weeks just gone:
Tuesday night (6th Aug) saw Mark Gittins and Ian Mayhew both representing Helsby up in Lancashire. Mark raced the 3k on the track at Bury and continued his excellent form (he’s also broken the overall Club Parkrun record in recent weeks) with a new PB of 9:29 for 7th place in Heat 2.Ian raced the Ramsbottom mile and clocked 5:01 for 9th place. In his own words: ‘A great and very unique event: it takes place on the footpaths within a park and is part of a local carnival with food and beer stalls and with a marching brass band and huge crowds making it a fantastic atmosphere.’

Thursday night saw the club involved in relay action, with 4 teams entered in the Chirk Castle Relay in the picturesque grounds of the National Trust venue. There proved to be no repeat of Helsby’s famous victory from the same event back in May, however it was still a great evening over the short but very challenging 3.5k course. Results of the Helsby teams were:
6th – Emil Krapotek (Al Garnett, Rob Fernyhough, Les Dash) 42:42
16th – Never Chirks a Challenge (Ian Mayhew, Tom Carey, Ian Peers) 46:39
23rd – Helsby Hulks (Phil Wood, Joey Kelly, Chris Green) 47:57
39th – Team Ajility (Immy Sykes, June Whitehead, Lucy Mills) 54:03
Full results, including a breakdown of individual runner split times are available here.
Also, keep an eye out on Youtube for the race blog of Wrexham runner Connor Rogers. He was there at Chirk with his gopro so we’re looking forward to seeing the footage when it comes out.

Future forays
Finally, a couple of announcements for upcoming weeks:
We’ve got the North West Relays and the Northern Relays coming up. The North West Relays are Sunday 8th September at Edge Hill University. 13:00 for womens’ race, 14:30 for mens’ race, 5k per leg. Northerns are Saturday 21st September in Stanley Park, Blackpool. 14:00 mens’ race, 14:05 womens’ race. These relays are fantastic days out – there’s something special about competing as a team. For all these events, we’re currently on fractions of teams e.g. for the Northern Mens’, it’s 6 runners per team and we’ve had 9 runners put their names forward so far. So we can enter 1 team but haven’t got enough for 2 unless more people come forward. So please get involved – Mike Fryer’s your contact for these and teams get entered end of August. Final note for this report: there’ll doubtless be some races that people have done that we’ve missed off.
Please our accept apologies if there is – but if you send YOUR reports in to us next week, we’ll get everything included 🙂
Thanks to Ian Mayhew for taking the lions share of the Round up blog duties for this edition – promising debut!
