Helsby News. Week ending 27/03/2016

Welcome to the Helsby RC weekly round-up of events. It appears to have been a busy week with lots going on around the club. If I’ve missed anything do let me know and I’ll add it to the blog. Please remember to send any race reports or contributions into helsby-race-reports@outlook.com. It doesn’t have to be anything lengthy – just a sentence or two and/or a link to the results of a race all helps to pull the blog together.

Helsby 10k Time Trial

We start this week’s news with a report on the Wednesday night time-trial from our club captain, Colin Thompson:
“A big thank you to all who attended the 10k TT on Wednesday and everyone who has supported the event over the winter. It wouldn’t have been possible without the help of Joe, Mario, Louise, Jackie, Ste Wiggins, Meg and Roy (tail runner). Thank you to everyone who has helped out with timing and tail running over the last few months, see you all in October when we’re back on the roads.
Great running again from everyone and it’s fantastic to see those times tumbling down each month. We also had a race clock which gave people that extra sprint to the finish! Big kudos to Becca Gibson for stepping up to the 10k distance for the first time, great effort! Well done to everyone else, hope you have all enjoyed it and it benefits those summer races.
Winners were:
Colin Thompson (37.42, 1st overall 10k)
Jane Ashbrook (43.07, 1st lady 10k)

Llantysillio Fell Race

12901429_1285012298179918_5523487094849146293_o On Saturday 26th March our second club fell counter was a race hosted by Tattenhall Runners. Thanks to Laura Baynham-Hughes for the race report, and to SJ Photography for the photos.
“Five Fellsby vests turned out for the Llantysilio fell race on Saturday, organised by Tattenhall. Unfortunately the Easter weekend meant some of the Fellsby regulars couldn’t make it. It is a great race, around 6miles with plenty of ups and downs! Warming up we spotted 2 luminous jackets hanging off the side of a narrow steep ascent. Chris12909630_1285004088180739_769745958924479294_osaid that will be Joe and Mario, I said don’t be daft, needless to say when we were going up the first steep climb I had to eat my hat. First cheer of the day from Helsby’s most dedicated support team!
The race started off, a light drizzle and up the first climb. Was quite pleased that I managed to keep Chris in view for first few miles. A really runnable race, with plenty of good climbs and some great descents (was trying to emulate Mario with varying success). The wind was crazy, at the top of the last climb I was nearly knocked over several time. The bloke behind me said later he thought I was getting off the path to let him pass but then I would jump back on. No I was getting blown off the path – and as if I would let someone behind me get in front!
12891618_1285009291513552_9056436311150911428_oIt was then a long descent to the finish with a second cheer from Joe and Mario on route. A sandwich and beer finished the race off nicely.
Not sure if official results out yet but Fellsby finished in following order:
Jim O’hara (12th)
Chris Baynham – Hughes
Laura Baynham – Hughes (7th lady I think)
Steve Riley
Andy Robinson”
A great report from Laura, but its also good to have another account from Steve Riley – “Small but perfectly formed turn-out for the Llantysilio fell race this weekend, with a few of the usual suspects busy with family stuff, work, and maybe the rotten forecast playing a part. Anyways, my first time at this close-ish race organised by our friends at Tattenhall, and definitely one to recommend for the future.
Jim O’Hara, me, Andy Robinson and both halves of the Baynham-Hughes power couple in action at the same event for a change. We met up in drizzly pub car park at Rhewl, nr Llangollen, ahead 6 miles and 2000′ of some great terrain and all the weather could throw at us. Jim, Chris, closely followed by Laura (giving CBH a visible shock). Steve and Andy bringing in the more modest half of the field. You’d be daft not to do next year’s.”
It is anticipated that the full results will be posted at: http://www.tattenhallrunners.com/our-races/llantysilio-fell-race/

Cardiff Half Marathon

On Saturday 26th March,  Britain’s Mo Farah won a bronze medal as Kenya’s Geoffrey Kamworor won back-to-back World Half Marathon titles in testing conditions in Cardiff ……and Helsby Running Club’s Darren O’Connor knocked a whopping 5 minutes off his PB in a time of  1:26:32. Well done Darren!

Liverpool to Manchester Ultra-Marathon

Also on Saturday, the band of Helsby ultra  runners continued to grow,  with Dave Madders completing a humongous 47 miles along the Trans-Pennine Trail and the River Mersey, from Liverpool to Manchester, on what was a very blustery day. Well done Dave – a fantastic achievement.

Air Products 10k

Thanks to Colin Thompson for this race report:
“Due to a busy weekend in the racing calendar only 4 green vests made it to Crewe for our 3rd road counter at the Air Products 10k. Good news for those who made the journey as some championship points were up for grabs! My maiden race at this 10k but I’d heard rumours of “fast course”and it didn’t disappoint, 2 laps around a pancake flat industrial estate made it very much pb potential.
Fantastic running from the Helsby contingent saw Davyd Mitchell take a full minute off his PB to sneak under 43 minutes and brilliant running from Dave Feakes and Tanya Downes tidied up the Helsby pack. It’s worth noting that this was Tanya’s first race in a while due to illness so a fantastic effort from her. Well done everyone.
Please see results below:
11th Colin Thompson 36.12
97th Davyd Mitchell 42.53 (PB)
141st Dave Feakes 45.04
275th Tanya Downes 56.58
