Helsby RC – Weekly round up

Hi all!

A quick reminder – please try and remember to send any race reports into helsbyracereports@gmail.com!

British Fell Relays

This weekend saw the annual British Fell Relays, this year held in Keswick in the wonderful Lake District. The event sees four legs – two paired legs, and two solo legs – and involves varying distances, one leg of which is typically navigation-heavy, and pits the club up against hundreds of teams from other clubs across all of Britain! A popular one amongst the “Fellsby” contingent, this year we took two teams up to the relays, a men’s and a women’s team including a number of newbies – which we absolutely love to see!
A more detailed race report will be coming in the next blog. As and when we get more details about next year’s race, we’ll be sure to share, as it’s a great race and an even better team day out!

NW Sunday Cross Country League

Cross country is back with a bang! The season opener took place at Clarke Gardens today, and we had a great Helsby RC turnout, including some first time racers in the green vest, and a few doing their first ever XC. A lovely 2 and a half laps of the park/woods, it’s nice and (relatively) flat, coming in at just over 4.5 miles.
As you can see from the photo we had a great turnout and some cracking results – and don’t forget these league races are free, so what more could you ask for? The results will be posted at www.stevesaunders.co.uk when they are completed. The next race in this league is TBC but currently 19th November at Beacon Park in Skelmersdale (will confirm when we can).

We also have a Liverpool & District cross country league, the next race for this is Saturday 28th October at Arrowe Park, starting at 2pm. Parking for this is on the main road or the pat and display just off Arrowe Brook Road, and the start/finish is at the football pavilion just off Arrowe Park Road. The race will be just under 5.5 miles, so 3 laps of the course.

Last Wednesday, we also had a talk at the sports club after the club run – this time, club stalwart Dave Feakes retailing tales of swimming the British channel to the audience. A great night once again, and now we all know that Dave was a body double for Peter Mullan in the film “On a Clear Day” – a sprinkling of Hollywood stardust amongst us! Thanks again, Dave – and look out for the next event at the club!

A note to some of the other races over the weekend – well done to all club members who took part in the Langdale races over the half and the full marathon distance, to those who ran at the Cheshire 10k/10 mile race (or volunteered, well done Bex!), and any other races that went on – including a few over on the incredibly-named “Punk Panther Nidderdale Way Ultra”!

A few final points – as unusual, those in the green army taking part in the Saturday morning parkrun staple can be found here https://www.parkrun.com/results/consolidatedclub/?clubNum=1721

Secondly, CHRISTMAS PARTY!!! Friday 8th December, wear your worst Christmas gear. Simple. Tickets will be £10, plus ones and second claimers welcome of course – if you want in, message Chris Fitzpatrick in facebook or email him at fitzpatrick_chris@hotmail.com

Wednesday 1st November – Chris Igoe, resident DJ extraordinaire turns 60, and we want to help him celebrate. After the club run on the Wednesday, we’ll be in the function room at the club – and there will be cake!
HCSC Quiz night Friday 17th November – it’s a great night, it helps the club out massively. If you’re free, get yourselves down and have a great evening.

Finally – hopefully you’ve seen the message about the sports club needing volunteers – please reach out to Fitzy on the email above if you can help out with anything!

Thanks all, see you in the next round-up!

Ben
